My Dyson Airwrap Keeps Shutting Off After 6 Years—Is It Finally Dying?

I received it as a Mother’s Day gift in 2020. Six years later, I cleaned the filter, took it in for service—and learned one lesson I wish I had known sooner.

After more than six years of use, my Dyson Airwrap keeps shutting off after only a short time. My Dyson Airwrap is dying.

Well… maybe.

It still turns on. It still styles my hair beautifully. But lately, it has developed one very frustrating habit:

It shuts itself off after only a short time.

Normally, that might be my cue to replace an old beauty tool.

But this one is different.

My Airwrap Was a Mother’s Day Gift From My Daughter

I didn’t actually buy my Dyson Airwrap myself.

My daughter gave it to me for Mother’s Day in May 2020.

That means I’ve had this Airwrap for more than six years.

And I didn’t leave it sitting beautifully in its box.

I really used it.

I have long hair and love volume. I’ve always been pretty good at styling my own hair, so I can create curls and volume with other tools.

But the Airwrap made it much easier to get the soft, full, bouncy hairstyle I love.

Over the years, it became one of those beauty tools I simply expected to be there whenever I wanted to do my hair.

So when it started shutting off, my first thought wasn’t:

“Which new Airwrap should I buy?”

It was:

“Can I save this one?”

Six Years Later, I Still Love What It Does to My Hair

This is probably the most important part of my review.

I didn’t use the Airwrap for a few weeks and then write about it.

I’ve been using it since 2020.

And after all these years, I still love the volume it gives my hair.

I especially like a fuller style with lift at the roots and soft, large waves around the face rather than tight curls.

That’s the look I can create easily with my Airwrap—and it’s exactly why I’m having such a hard time giving it up.

This is why I still love my Airwrap after six years—the soft volume and full, bouncy shape are hard for me to give up.

My Dyson Airwrap Keeps Shutting Off

The problem didn’t begin with the Airwrap completely dying.

It would start normally and work for a little while.

Then suddenly—

off.

I could wait, try again, and sometimes it would work for another short period.

Since the machine could still operate, I wondered whether restricted airflow or overheating might be contributing to the problem.

And that led me to something I should probably have paid more attention to:

the filter.

I Cleaned the Filter—and It Actually Helped

After years of styling my hair, there was plenty of opportunity for dust and styling-product residue to collect around the filter area.

And yes…

I use hairspray.

So I carefully cleaned the filter.

To my surprise, it helped.

The Airwrap seemed to run better and stay on a little longer.

For a moment, I thought:

I fixed it!

Unfortunately, not quite.

The improvement was noticeable, but the shutting-off problem eventually returned.

Cleaning the filter helped my Airwrap run better for a while, but unfortunately it didn’t completely solve the repeated shut-off problem.

So I Took My 6-Year-Old Airwrap in for Service

At that point, I decided it deserved a professional opinion.

After all, this wasn’t some beauty gadget I had used three times and forgotten about.

I had been using it since 2020.

So I took my Airwrap to a Dyson service location, hoping there might be something they could do to keep it going a little longer.

Maybe a part needed attention.

Maybe six years of regular use had simply caught up with it.

Maybe there was something I hadn’t thought of.

I arrived with my Airwrap, ready to have it checked.

And then came the question I wasn’t prepared for:

“Do you have the serial number?”

Oh.

The One Thing I Didn’t Have: The Serial Number

I’ve moved since receiving my Airwrap, and somewhere along the way I threw away the original box.

Of course, I kept the Airwrap.

I kept the attachments.

I even kept the little filter-cleaning brush.

But the box?

Long gone.

And when I needed service, I couldn’t provide the serial number they required.

So after more than six years of carefully keeping an expensive hair tool, I discovered that the one piece of information I suddenly needed was the one thing I didn’t have.

Without the required serial number, they couldn’t proceed with the service.

So I came home with exactly the same Airwrap.

Still working.

Still shutting off.

And apparently…

still not ready for retirement.

Why Don’t I Just Buy a New Dyson Airwrap?

Believe me, I thought about it.

Then I checked the current price.

And suddenly my old Airwrap started looking surprisingly healthy again. 😄

The bigger problem is that mine isn’t completely dead.

If it didn’t turn on at all, the decision would be easy.

But it still gives me a little time.

And during those precious minutes?

I still love what it does to my hair.

That’s what makes replacing it harder.

I Even Have Another Hair Styler for Korea

There’s another reason I’ve learned to live with more than one styling tool.

My U.S. Airwrap isn’t a hair tool I simply take with me and plug into the wall when I travel to Korea because of the different electrical voltage.

So I have another, much less expensive styling tool that I use there.

And yes, I can do my hair with it.

I can create curls.

I can create volume.

I can make it work.

But is it my Airwrap?

No.

And maybe that’s one of the best compliments I can give it.

I have alternatives.

I know how to style my own hair.

But after more than six years, I still prefer my Airwrap.

Was the Dyson Airwrap Worth It After Six Years?

This is where my answer may be different from someone who has owned one for only a few weeks or months.

I’ve lived with mine since 2020.

I’ve used it enough for the finish to show wear.

I’ve cleaned it.

I’ve used other styling tools.

And now I’ve even taken it in hoping to have it serviced.

So was it worth it?

For me, yes.

That doesn’t mean I think everyone needs to spend this much money on a hair tool.

You absolutely don’t need an Airwrap to have beautiful hair.

But when I judge an expensive beauty product, I ask myself a simple question:

Did I actually use it enough to justify owning it?

With my Airwrap, the answer is definitely yes.

I’ve tried other expensive beauty devices that received tremendous hype but didn’t impress me nearly as much in real life.

The Airwrap is different.

I know I love it because now that it isn’t working properly, I miss it.

No advertisement could convince me of that.

More than six years of use did.

One Thing I Would Do Differently

If you own an expensive hair tool or beauty device, here’s the lesson I learned:

Save your serial number.

Take a photo of it when the product is new.

Save your purchase confirmation or gift receipt if you have one.

Keep the information somewhere you’ll still be able to find it years later—even if you eventually throw away the box.

You may not need it today.

You may not need it next year.

But you might need it six years later when you’re standing at a service center holding your beloved old hair tool.

I certainly wish I had done that.

So… Am I Buying a New Airwrap?

Not yet.

I looked.

I thought about it.

I saw the price.

And I decided my old Airwrap and I could work on our relationship a little longer. 😄

As long as it continues to operate normally and safely during the short periods when it works, I’ll keep the filter clean and enjoy whatever time it has left.

Eventually, I know I’ll have to let it go.

But for now?

My 2020 Mother’s Day Airwrap is staying with me.

After more than six years—and a lot of very good hair days—I think it has earned a little extra patience.

And perhaps that’s the most honest long-term review I can give it.

My 6-Year Dyson Airwrap Verdict

How long have I owned it? Since May 2020.

Was it really used regularly? Yes. This is a true long-term personal-use review.

Did cleaning the filter help? Yes. Mine ran better afterward, although cleaning didn’t completely solve the shutting-off problem.

Would I buy a Dyson Airwrap again? Probably yes—but I’m not rushing to replace one that still works intermittently.

Was it worth the price? For me, yes. I genuinely used and enjoyed it for more than six years.

My biggest lesson? Save the serial number.

And maybe don’t throw away everything when you move. 😄
