Calvin Klein Eternity for Women Review: Why I've Worn the Original for Almost 40 Years

I've tried newer versions, different rose fragrances, and plenty of other perfumes. But for almost four decades, I keep coming back to the original Eternity.

Some perfumes are simply fragrances.

Others somehow become part of who we are.

For me, that fragrance is the original Calvin Klein Eternity Eau de Parfum for Women.

I started wearing it shortly after I came to America in 1989.

And 37 years later, I'm still wearing it.

But the story of how I found it is actually one of my favorite parts.

Because I didn't find Eternity.

My husband did.

It Started With a Stranger in a Department Store

Not long after I came to America, my husband was walking through a department store when a woman passed by.

He noticed her fragrance immediately.

He liked it so much that he actually followed her and asked:

“Excuse me, what perfume are you wearing?”

She told him it was Calvin Klein Eternity for Women.

So he bought a bottle for me.

At the time, it was simply a perfume my husband thought smelled beautiful.

Neither of us could possibly have known that almost four decades later, I would still be wearing it.

But one bottle became another.

And another.

And another.

Eventually, Eternity wasn't just a perfume my husband had bought for me.

It became my fragrance.

I've Worn It Through So Many Chapters of My Life

When I think about how long I've worn this fragrance, it's almost difficult to believe.

I first wore Eternity as a young woman newly arrived in America.

I wore it as a wife.

I wore it while raising my children.

I wore it through my 30s.

My 40s.

My 50s.

And now, I'm still wearing it in my 60s.

So when I smell Eternity today, I'm not simply evaluating whether I like a perfume.

There are decades of memories attached to that scent.

Different homes.

Different seasons.

My children growing up.

Family celebrations.

Church.

Travel.

Ordinary mornings getting ready for the day.

It has quietly followed me through a large part of my adult life.

What Does the Original Eternity for Women Smell Like?

I've always loved the scent of roses and beautiful floral fragrances.

That's probably one reason the floral character of Eternity appealed to me from the beginning.

But I wouldn't call the original Eternity simply a “rose perfume.”

The fragrance is more complex than that.

Calvin Klein describes the original Eternity Eau de Parfum for Women as a floral fragrance with freesia, mandarin and sage at the top; muguet, white lily, marigold and narcissus in the heart; and patchouli, sandalwood and amber at the base.

For me, though, perfume has never been about being able to identify every individual note.

I simply know what happens when I put it on my skin.

It smells right on me.

And after all these years, that still hasn't changed.

I've always loved floral and rose-like fragrances, which may be one reason Eternity felt so natural to me from the beginning.

I Didn't Stay With Eternity Because I Never Tried Anything Else

This is important.

I've worn the original Eternity for almost four decades, but that doesn't mean I never experimented with other fragrances.

I definitely did.

Over the years, Calvin Klein introduced other fragrances in the Eternity family, and naturally I was curious.

I tried Eternity Moment.

I tried Eternity Aqua.

I thought perhaps one of the newer variations might become my new favorite.

After all, if I loved Eternity so much, wouldn't I love a newer interpretation of it too?

They were pleasant fragrances.

But something was missing.

They didn't feel like me in the same way the original did.

And Yes, I've Tried Other Rose Fragrances Too

Because I love rose scents, I've also tried other rose and floral perfumes over the years.

One of them was Chloé Roses de Chloé.

I've tried others as well.

Some were beautiful.

Some smelled more modern.

Some were fragrances I genuinely enjoyed wearing for a while.

But none of them permanently replaced Eternity.

Eventually, I would reach for that familiar bottle again.

The original.

Maybe it's the way the fragrance works with my skin.

Maybe it's familiarity.

Maybe after wearing something for decades, your brain begins to recognize the scent as part of you.

Or maybe it's a combination of all three.

Whatever the reason, I've stopped looking for a replacement.

I don't love Eternity because I haven't tried anything else.

I love it because I have—and I still come back to the original.

I've tried other fragrances in the Eternity family over the years, but the original is still the one that feels most like me.

Is the Original Eternity a Little Old-Fashioned?

Maybe.

And I'm perfectly okay with that. 😊

Eternity isn't a trendy new perfume.

I've been wearing it since around 1989, so I'm certainly not going to pretend it smells like the latest fragrance launched this year.

Today's popular perfumes may be lighter, sweeter, cleaner or more minimal.

I've smelled newer fragrances.

I've worn newer fragrances.

I've even tried newer versions from the Eternity family.

And yet...

I'm still here wearing the original.

At this stage of my life, I don't particularly care whether my signature perfume is considered trendy.

I care whether it feels like me.

And Eternity does.

The Scent My Children Associate With Mom

This is the part of the story that means the most to me.

My children grew up with this fragrance.

They smelled it when I got ready.

They smelled it on my clothes.

They smelled it when I hugged them.

Year after year, without any of us really noticing it happening, the scent became connected to their memory of me.

So to my children, Eternity isn't simply:

“The perfume Mom wears.”

It is one of the scents that makes them think of Mom.

And the older I get, the more meaningful that feels.

Scent has an extraordinary relationship with memory.

A photograph can remind us how someone looked.

A song can take us back to a particular moment.

And sometimes a familiar fragrance can make us feel that a person is suddenly right beside us again.

After all these years, Eternity has somehow become part of my children's memory of who I am.

It smells like Mom.

After so many years, Eternity became more than my perfume. To my children, it became one of the scents that means “Mom.”

Something Funny Still Happens

Remember how this story began?

My husband noticed a fragrance on a woman passing by in a department store.

He liked it enough to follow her and ask:

“What perfume are you wearing?”

Well, something similar still happens to me.

Every once in a while, someone notices my fragrance as I pass by and asks:

“What perfume are you wearing?”

And whenever it happens, I can't help thinking about how this whole story began.

Almost four decades ago, my husband was the stranger asking that question.

Now sometimes someone asks me.

And my answer is still the same:

Eternity.

There's something wonderfully full-circle about that.

Why Calvin Klein Eternity for Women Became My Signature Fragrance

I've thought about why I've stayed with the same fragrance for so long.

Obviously, I like the way it smells.

I love florals.

My husband loved the scent enough to choose it for me.

And apparently, other people still notice it.

But after 37 years, I think there's something more.

A signature fragrance isn't necessarily the perfume with the highest online rating.

It isn't necessarily the most expensive perfume you own.

And it certainly doesn't have to be the newest.

Maybe a signature fragrance is simply the scent you love enough to keep wearing until one day...

other people begin associating that fragrance with you.

That's what happened with Eternity and me

After almost four decades, wearing Eternity is simply part of getting ready.

Would I Recommend Calvin Klein Eternity Today?

Yes—but with an important qualification.

Fragrance is extremely personal.

I'm not going to tell you that because Eternity has worked for me for almost 40 years, it will work the same way for you.

It may not.

If you prefer very light, minimal or distinctly modern fragrances, the original Eternity may feel more classic than what you normally wear.

And perfume can smell different from one person's skin to another.

So if you've never worn Eternity before, I would recommend trying it on your own skin first.

Wear it for a few hours.

See how it develops.

See how you feel wearing it.

Because that's ultimately what matters.

Would I Buy It Again?

This may be the easiest question I've ever answered in a beauty review.

Yes. 😂

I have already bought it again.

And again.

And again.

For 37 years.

I've tried Eternity Moment.

I've tried Eternity Aqua.

I've tried Chloé Roses de Chloé.

I've tried other rose and floral fragrances.

And after all of that experimenting...

I'm still buying the original Eternity for Women.

At this point, I don't think I need to keep searching.

My Final Verdict

My story with Calvin Klein Eternity began shortly after I came to America in 1989.

My husband smelled it on a woman passing through a department store.

He followed her to ask what perfume she was wearing.

Then he bought it for me.

One bottle became another.

Years became decades.

I became a mother.

My children grew up.

I tried other perfumes.

I tried newer versions of Eternity.

I tried other beautiful rose fragrances.

And somehow I kept returning to the same place.

The original Eternity.

Maybe it's a little old-fashioned now.

That's okay.

I'm not looking for a perfume that tells people I'm following the latest fragrance trend.

I'm looking for something that feels like me.

And the funny thing is that the story has now come full circle.

Almost four decades ago, my husband stopped a stranger because he wanted to know what fragrance she was wearing.

Today, people occasionally stop me and ask the same question.

“What perfume are you wearing?”

And my answer is still:

Eternity.

Somewhere between those two moments, it stopped being simply a perfume I wore.

It became my scent.

And perhaps the most beautiful part of all:

To my children, it smells like Mom.
